The development of 4D printed SMP medical devices is inseparable from the in-depth cooperation between doctors and engineers. The application of 4D printed SMP medical devices will facilitate the rapid realization of ‘smart medical care’ and accelerate the process of ‘intelligentization’ of medical devices.Over the past two decades, remarkable advancements have been achievedin stimulus-responsive shape-memory polymers (SMPs), which exhibitdesirable properties such as shape-memory characteristics, deformability, andbiocompatibility, while responding to external stimuli. The development ofshape.memory polymer composites (SMPCs) leads to high recovery forces andnovel functionalities, including electrical actuation, magnetic actuation, andbiocompatibility. The enhanced remotely controllable properties and functionalityfurther expand the application of SMPs in biomedical areas, such as surgicalapplications for replacing handheld surgical instruments and drug deliverysystems. In this review, the biomedical device applications ofSMPs and SMPCsare focused on and their recent advancements in bone tissue scaffolds, lumenstents, and drug delivery carriers are examined. Furthermore, the bottlenecksand challenges encountered by SMPCs in biomedical devices are elucidated. The future development trend of SMPs and SMPCs is also discussed, aimingto provide valuable insights for broadening their applications in biomedicalfelds.
